Delta & Victoria
|Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe
Whatever time you get in, we guarantee Jo’burg will be there to meet you at the airport. Botswana’s Khama Rhino Santuary specialises in rhinos, the Okavango Delta is great at hippos and Chobe National Park does a mean giraffe, ostrich, zebra, elephant combo.
Tent etiquette 101
- - Keep it neat – nothing worse than tripping over a backpack in the pitch dark and landing awkwardly on your sleeping friend
- - Zip it up every single time, even if you’re busting to pee during the night and will only be gone for 2 seconds – that’s exactly how long it takes a honey badger to get in.
- - Share and share alike – if your tent-mate forgot to bring toothpaste, lend them yours or bear the brunt of their morning breath.
TRIP CHANGE FOR 2015:
The tour has increased in duration and will now be a 10 day tour instead of 9. As a result, this itinerary will now visit Nata and explore the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans.
Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1: Johannesburg
Meals included: 6 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 6 dinners
Head out to the Burma flea market for any last minute safari must-haves (t-shirts, hats, books) and grab a bite to eat while you're there. You'll find everything from Indian and Chinese to Turkish and South African food.
Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6pm on Day 1
You can arrive at any time as there are no activities planned
Perhaps visit the Apartheid Museum, the Museum Africa, the Art Gallery or head off on the Gold Reef City and Heritage mine tour
Day 2: Khama Rhino Sanctuary
About 30 rhinos roam around this 400ha community-based reserve. Don't forget your binoculars, or you'll be getting them confused with big rocks.
Cross the border into Botswana and travel toward the Khama Rhino Sanctuary (600 km, approx 8-10 hrs)
Head out on a dusk game drive to see the rhinos when they are at their most active
Day 3: Maun
Up early for a really long drive to Maun (pronounced ma-ooon) so pee before you get in the truck. We also offer a free massage service (it's really bumpy).
Your destination today is Maun (520 km, approx 7-8 hrs) - the gateway to the Okavango Delta
Camp on the outskirts of town at a simple campsite with shared facilities
Day 4-5: Okavango Delta
There's nothing more relaxing than feeling the African sun on your face as you lie back in a mokoro, eyes closed while your expert poler propels you through the calm waters... until a hippo grunts.
Traverse the waterways by mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe navigated by friendly local 'polers'.
Perhaps spot some of the wildlife and prolific birdlife
Spend time exploring the maze of lagoons, lakes and streams on foot, led by experienced and knowledgeable guides
Camp on a remote island in the heart of the wilderness
Dig a bush toilet and go without a shower, it's all part of the Okavango experience
Hear the sounds of the African bush at night
Wake early the following morning and head out on a sunrise walk
Return to camp for breakfast and take the rest of the day to relax, take a swim or test your poling skills before heading out for an afternoon walk or perhaps another mokoro trip
Day 6: Maun
Visit a rural village then drive back to Maun. If you're a bit tuckered out from all the excitement, this is a good time for a nap.
Take the mokoro back to the poling station before transferring back to Maun (60 km, approx 2-3 hrs)
Visit a local rural village for an insight into life in the Okavango Delta
Perhaps fly over the delta in a small plane for a bird's-eye view
Camp on the outskirts of town at a simple campsite with shared facilities
Day 7: Chobe National Park
Traffic on the road to Kasane can be pretty intense. Giraffe, ostrich, zebra, and elephant, however, are all pretty courteous road users. Zip around Chobe in 4WDs, spotting heaps of wildlife and brushing up on your photography skills.
Enjoy a relaxing water safari down the Chobe River
Day 8-9: Victoria Falls
This morning there is the possibility to join an optional game drive in Chobe National Park.
Travel on to Victoria Falls (330 km, approx 5-6 hrs)
Cross the border into Zimbabwe and have lunch on the banks of the Zambezi
Visit the magnificent Victoria Falls
Make the most of whitewater rafting, bungee jumping, elephant safaris and some more game drives. They'll try and make you wear a yellow poncho at Vic Falls. Don't. This place is far too pretty to have you looking like an idiot in all your photographs.
Perhaps enjoy optional activities such as abseiling, canoeing, flying fox, a helicopter flight, jet boating, a horseback safari, bungee jumping and more besides.
