Animals Like You
A circuit trip through Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. Sight rhinos and flamingos in Lake Nakuru – two animals as opposite as animals come. Hang with the chimpanzees in Kibale Forest and the gorillas in Rwanda. Take a birdwatching cruise through the Kazinga Channel, then spot hippos and other beastliness about Lake Mburo.
The only difference between us and the animals is our opposable thumbs. That, and the fact that you won't find any animals wandering around the Masai Mara singing, "I bless the rains down in Africa, gonna take some time to do the things we never ha-a-a-aa-aaaave".
Day 1 - Nairobi
Nairobi is huge, and you can see it all from the top floor of the Kenyatta International Conference Centre. On a clear day you can see Mount Kenya and Mount Kilimanjaro. On a foggy day you'll be lucky to see your own reflection.Arrive in Nairobi and check out the bars, restaurants, markets and shopsPerhaps explore the National Museum of Kenya, the Karen Blixen Museum (author of Out of Africa) or Bomas of Kenya
Day 2 - Lake Nakuru
This is the best place to see rhinos, but there are also baboons and flamingos everywhere. Head to the Saidia Children's Home and meet some kids who will leave a great big imprint on your heart.
Drive north-west past views of the Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha and Elementaita to Lake Nakuru National Park
Stop along the way in the town of Gilgil
Visit the Saidia Children's Home Project
Spot members of the Big Five and perhaps rhinos too
Arrive in time for a short evening game drive along the shore of the lake
Day 3-4 - Eldoret/Kampala
Early morning game drive then cross the border into Uganda. Camp near Kampala, which is quite the groovy little city. Get a bargain (leather jacket for $20, anyone?) from Owino market, dodge the boda bodas (bicycle taxis) on Kampala Road, chew on some sugarcane and cool down with an ice-cold Tusker beer.Wake early and head into the park for a morning game drive.Return to camp for brunch before driving to Eldoret (200 km, approx 5-6 hrs)Camp on the outskirts of EldoretCross the border into Uganda and travel on to its capital city, Kampala (390 km, approx 8-9 hrs)Camp on the outskirts of Kampala
Day 5-6 - Kibale Forest National Park
With the highest concentration of primates in the world, it's no surprise that things can get a little crazy here. On a walking safari you'll see that chimps aren't that much different to us - squabbling over food, mucking about and getting told off by their parents. Wander through tea plantations (pinkies out!) and meet the locals or kick back at camp. After breakfast, drive to Kampala City.Travel on to Kibale Forest National Park (350 km, approx 6-7 hrs)Watch chimpanzees in the rainforestTake a 2-4 hour walking safari that gives us the amazing opportunity to watch chimpanzees in their natural habitatPerhaps take walks to villages, tea plantations, rivers, lakes or just relax around the campsiteCamp in a basic campground that has showers and flush toilets
Day 7 - Queen Elizabeth National Park
You'll find a few big names here including elephants, Ugandan kobs and maybe lions, but the boat ride on Kazinga Channel is the real winner.Travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park (200 km, approx 5.5 hrs).Take a game drive en route to your campLook out for elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, Ugandan kobs and waterbucksTake a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel - known for pelicans, eagles and other birdlife, as well as hippoStay at a basic camp on the grounds of a lodge which has drop toilets and basic showers.
Day 8 - Lake Bunyonyi
No, it doesn't look like those things that your nan complains about on her feet. Yuk. Bunyoni means 'place of little birds'. Try your luck in a mokoro, which is like a gondola you'd see in Venice. Watch the experts then have a crack.Travel on to Lake Bunyonyi (250 km, approx 6-7 hrs)Perhaps hire a traditional dugout canoe (mokoro)
Day 9-11 - Gorilla Trek
The trek can be tough (between 1-4 hours) but once you spot your first gorilla it will seem like a distant memory. If you're the emotional sort, don't forget the tissues. Don't try to play it tough, trust us when we say you should grab one of the free walking sticks at the start of the trek.Explore Kigali on foot, if time allowsVisit Kigali's genocide memorial.Enjoy a day of gorilla trackingSpend an hour with the gorillas, once you've found themPerhaps visit the Diane Fossey Memorial, Golden monkeys, go hiking on Mount Bisoke or set off on a nature walk
Day 12 - Lake Mburo
There's five lakes in this park, and we're not talking about the kind of lake you'll find in your local botanical gardens. The types of animals who drink from these lakes include hippos, crocodiles and sitatunga antelope. No ducks allowed.Travel to the border with Uganda and complete the border formalitiesHead to Lake Mburo (420 km, approx 9-10 hrs) - the best place in Africa to see eland antelopeSpot the likes of zebras, impalas, buffalo, leopards, hyenas, jackals, hippos, crocodiles and a variety of waterbirds
Day 13-14 - Jinja
Exciting news today. You get to stop at the equator on the way to Jinja. There's never been a better time to belt out a few bars of Hokey Pokey. Camp alongside the river, which is also the source of the Nile as it leaves Lake Victoria. Not bad.
Take a two-hour guided walking safari through the Lake Mburo National Park, spotting animals and birdlifeTravel from Lake Mburo to Jinja via Kampala, stopping en route at the equator (340 km, approx 7-8 hrs)Spend time as you please in Jinja - a haven for the adventurer, the adrenaline junkie and the eco-travellerCamp at a scenic riverside retreat with showers and flush toilets
Day 15-16 - Eldoret/Nairobi
With its high altitude, Eldoret has produced many of the world's best runners. You are probably not going to be one of them. Stay here overnight then head to Nairobi, where your trip finishes. Sadly, there won't be a ribbon at the finish line.
Begin the journey back to Nairobi, stopping overnight outside the town of Eldoret (300 km, approx 7-8 hrs)
Continue on to Nairobi early the next morning (370 km, approx 7-8 hrs)Arrive back in Nairobi (no accommodation provided for tonight)Important: Please don't book any international flights until after 9pm this evening

Geckos strongly recommends the use of a neck wallet or money belt while travelling, for the safe-keeping of your passport, air tickets, cash and other valuable items. Please leave your valuable jewellery at home - you won't need it while travelling. Most of our hotels will have a safety deposit box, which is the most secure way of storing your valuables. A lock is recommended for securing your luggage.
Your leader will accompany you on all included activities, however during your trip you'll have some free time to pursue your own interests, relax and take it easy or explore at your leisure. While your group leader will assist you with the available options in a given location, please note that any optional activities you undertake are not part of your itinerary, and Geckos makes no representations about the safety of the activity or the standard of the operators running them. Please use your own good judgement when selecting an activity in your free time. Please also note that your group leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the trip itinerary if it's deemed necessary due to safety concerns.
FIRE PRECAUTIONS: Please be aware that local laws governing tourism facilities in this region differ from those in your home country and not all the accommodation which we use has a fire exit, fire extinguishers or smoke alarms.
TRAFFIC AND DRIVING CONDITIONS: Depending on where you come from please note that drivers in this part of the world may drive on the opposite side of the road from what you are used to. Look both ways before crossing any road. Be aware that traffic can be a little more chaotic than you might be used to at home.
PETTY THEFT AND PERSONAL SAFETY:While travelling there is always the risk of pick-pocketing and petty theft, particularly in the more touristy cities. We recommend that you exercise caution when walking alone at night and encourage you to walk together and only on main, well-lit thoroughfares. Be particularly vigilant on public transport. Simple measures like carrying your day pack on your front, not hanging your bag over the back of your chair and wearing a money belt will reduce any chance that your valuables should go missing.
SWIMMING POOLS: You may stay at hotels with unfenced pools and no life guard on duty.
UNFENCED CAMP SITES: On some trips where you will be staying within a national park, please note that at times you will stay in unfenced camp sites. While this is a fantastic experience, there are a few safety rules that must be adhered to. While staying in national parks it's important that you listen to any advice given by your leader and the park rangers regarding responsible and safe behaviour.
Some hotel balconies don't meet UK standards in terms of the width of the balcony fence being narrower than 10cm.
Please be aware that local laws governing transportation safety may differ from those in the western world or from your home country and not all the transport which we use provides seat belts.

I had an amazing time with Geckos. The tour leader Peter, was informative and fun. The driver and chef was accommodating and hilarious! The Geckos team really made us feel like family. It really was the trip of a lifetime. The gorillas, white water rafting, game drives, shopping and sleeping to the sound of lions are all just a few of the highlights.

The highlight of our trip was most definitely the mountain gorillas in Rwanda, but we also enjoyed all the animals we saw in the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and our boat trip on the Kazinga Channel. We felt very safe on some fairly rough roads with our driver, and the food on the tour was absolutely fantastic.
