Coastin' the Cape

Cape Town - South Africa's 'Mother City'
Drakensberg's flat-topped mountains
The cultural history of South Africa's 'City of Gold' Johannesburg
Cintsa East, the Wild Coast

This tour is operated by Bazbus in South AFrica. A Geckos local Tour Guide will accompany you on this journey though South Africa.

    Day 1 - Cape Town

Today is an arrival day, so you may arrive at any time. The remainder of your day is free to enjoy at leisure.

You will meet your tour guide this evening at around 6pm.

We do recommend you book accommodation for additional days and stay on to explore the vibrant city of Cape Town and its beautiful surrounding regions. Not-to-be-missed excursions include catching the cable car up to the top of Table Mountain (weather permitting), taking the ferry across to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years, and a day trip down to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope peninsula.

    Day 2 - Stellenbosch

Head towards Stellenbosch and go on a wine tour in one of the many wineries in the region.

Known as the City of Oaks, Stellenbosch is one of South Africa's main university towns and more importantly the centre of the South African wine industry, which produces over 1 million litres of wine a year!

    Day 3-4 - Hermanus

Up early and on the bus, we head to Hermanus.

With its modern infrastructure, incredible scenery and endless adventure opportunities, you are sure to enjoy your time in Hermanus.

Depending on the time of year, you may wish to head out and do some whale spotting, paragliding or quad biking.

    Day 5-6 - Knysna

Located in the Western Cape Province, we head to Knysna.

Take an included cruise down the Knysna Lagoon on the John Benn Ferry and also go on a guided Knysna Rasta Village Tour.

The remainder of your time here is free for you to explore this wonderful region.

    Day 7-8 - Storms River

From Knysna we continue on to Storms River. Located on the Eastern Cape of South Africa, this small village is located along the Garden Path.

You have free time to explore this region and choose some of the adventurous activities it has to offer.

Gateway to the Tsitsikamma National Park, you can do an optional hike within the park, take in a canopy tour or go on a mountain bike ride. Your Tour Leader will be on hand to help you book in any optional activity you may wish to go on.

    Day 9 - Port Elizabeth

Drive to Port Elizabeth, the largest city in the Eastern Cape. A highlight is to have a drink in the local township pub called a shebeen. The shebeen also acts as an informal meeting house and is an important part of township life. We may get to share a few ales with the locals and maybe a few jokes as well.

    Day 10 - Cintsa

We travel west along the Wild Coast to the seaside village of Cintsa. After setting up camp there is time to explore one of the many pristine beaches in the region, absorb the panoramic seaviews on a hiking trail or just settle ourselves in with a sundowner and watch the glorious African sunset.

    Day 11-12 - Coffee Bay

Journey to Coffee Bay on the rugged Wild Coast. This is a real traveller's haven when you can relax and enjoy just relaxing on the beach. If you are looking for activity, you can enjoy hikes along the top of the cliffs and admire the stunning vista. There is also an opportunity to enjoy some snorkelling or take some lessons on how to surf.

On the morning of Day 12 we will go on a morning village tour and visit the Hole in the Wall.

    Day 13-14 - Durban

Hang out in Durban and hit the beach, the bars or both.
Perhaps visit the Art Gallery, the Juma Masjid Mosque, or enjoy a bay cruise or surf lesson.
Explore the night life with your guide.

    Day 15-16 - Drakensberg Mountains

Our next destination is Giant's Castle, located right in the heart of the magnificent Drakensberg Mountain range, where we spend our next two nights. The Drakensberg Mountains, or 'uKhahlamba' (the Barrier of Spears), is a 200-kilometre-long mountainous wonderland and a UNESCO World Heritage site. We take a hike to view the ancient Bushmen rock paintings in this spectacular region. The rest of our time is free to do as we please. You may choose to walk on another of the numerous hiking trails in the region, all offering striking views of the dramatic landscape of the Drakensberg. You can be as active or sedentary as you please during your stay here, whilst taking in the beautiful scenery in this mountainous wonderland.

    Day 17 - Johannesburg

Your tour ends on arrival in Johannesburg. Additional accommodation can be booked for you at an additonal cost. If you choose to go to the Apartheid Museum you'll be given a ticket that says either "White/Blanke" or "Non-White/Nie-Blanke" dictating what entrance you can use. It's a pretty confronting end to the tour, but an important one. Perhaps visit the Apartheid Museum, Art Gallery, Museum Africa or head off on a Gold Reed City and Heritage Mine Tour

Please do not book any flights to depart prior to 10pm this evening.

    Safety Information

It is recommended that you check your government's advice for their latest travel information prior to your departure.

Geckos strongly recommends the use of a neck wallet or money belt while travelling, for the safe-keeping of your passport, air tickets, cash and other valuable items. Please leave your valuable jewellery at home - you won't need it while travelling. Most of our hotels will have a safety deposit box, which is the most secure way of storing your valuables. A lock is recommended for securing your luggage.

Your leader will accompany you on all included activities, however during your trip you'll have some free time to pursue your own interests, relax and take it easy or explore at your leisure. While your group leader will assist you with the available options in a given location, please note that any optional activities you undertake are not part of your itinerary, and Geckos makes no representations about the safety of the activity or the standard of the operators running them. Please use your own good judgement when selecting an activity in your free time. Please also note that your group leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the trip itinerary if it's deemed necessary due to safety concerns.

FIRE PRECAUTIONS: Please be aware that local laws governing tourism facilities in this region differ from those in your home country and not all the accommodation which we use has a fire exit, fire extinguishers or smoke alarms.

TRAFFIC AND DRIVING CONDITIONS: Depending on where you come from please note that drivers in this part of the world may drive on the opposite side of the road from what you are used to. Look both ways before crossing any road. Be aware that traffic can be a little more chaotic than you might be used to at home.

PETTY THEFT AND PERSONAL SAFETY:While travelling there is always the risk of pick-pocketing and petty theft, particularly in the more touristy cities. We recommend that you exercise caution when walking alone at night and encourage you to walk together and only on main, well-lit thoroughfares. Be particularly vigilant on public transport. Simple measures like carrying your day pack on your front, not hanging your bag over the back of your chair and wearing a money belt will reduce any chance that your valuables should go missing.

SWIMMING POOLS: You may stay at hotels with unfenced pools and no life guard on duty.

UNFENCED CAMP SITES: On some trips where you will be staying within a national park, please note that at times you will stay in unfenced camp sites. While this is a fantastic experience, there are a few safety rules that must be adhered to. While staying in national parks it's important that you listen to any advice given by your leader and the park rangers regarding responsible and safe behaviour.

Some hotel balconies don't meet UK standards in terms of the width of the balcony fence being narrower than 10cm.

Please be aware that local laws governing transportation safety may differ from those in the western world or from your home country and not all the transport which we use provides seat belts.
