Jo’burg to Kruger National Park and back – game viewing and bird spotting to the max. Lions, elephants, leopards, crocs, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, rhinos, zebras, buffalo, hippos. And just in case you’re unimpressed, you’ll also get to a private game reserve in Greater Kruger National Park. Blue River Canyon and the Three Rondavels en route back to Jo’burg.
Camping in game reserves is a pretty special way to experience game reserves. It’s like going to a drive-in movie but all the animals are in 3D and alive. And there’s no movie. Or popcorn.
Arrive in Jo'Burg then leave Jo'burg for the gaping sprawl of Kruger National Park, where the Big Five reign supreme. There are 150 species of animals here so pick your jaw up off the ground and get exploring.
Depart Johannesburg at around 5am
Arrive at the Campsite in time for dinner (570 km, approx 8-9 hours travel time including stops along the way)
Head straight into prime game viewing areas
Set off at the crack of dawn for a whole day of game viewing. If you're not an early riser, today's the day you change that habit. There'll probably be lions, elepphants and maybe a couple of giraffes among the wildlife. As excited as you'll be, try and reserve a bit of energy for your evening excursion too.
Rise early and have a light breakfast before embarking on a morning game drive
Most of the day will be spent game viewing, bird watching and stopping at various waterholes and viewpoints
Returning to your camp in the park, there's time to freshen up before heading out on an open vehicle night drive
Another full day to look at amazing animals before heading to a private reserve in the late afternoon. As evening approaches, head for the bar and enjoy some sweet, sweet safari sundowners (alcohol).
Another early start to try and see more of Africa's wildlife
Exit the National park in the late afternoon and head to a private game reserve (50 km, approx 1 hour)
Stay in an intimate lodge which offers a cosy bar and swimming pool
Take a final nature walk with a professional field guide and get insider tips on how to read animal tracks, in case you fancy doing a bit of tracking when you get home. Head back to Jo'burg final the Blue River Canyon and the Three Rondavels, and ask yourself if you've ever done quite so much in the space of four days. The answer, most probably, will be no.
Rise early and head out on a morning bush walk with a qualified nature guide
Transfer back to Johannesburg (600 km, approx 8-9 hrs)
Take in views at the viewpoint over the Blyde River Canyon
On arrival in Jo'burg you can be dropped at the airport or any nominated Johannesburg or Pretoria hotel. No accommodation is provided for tonight, but we are able to book you additional accommodation in Johannesburg. Please ask at time of booking. Please don't book any international flights until after 10pm this evening.

By travelling on a Geckos Overland trip you would now be aware that your trip is a participation camping tour. Participation camping means that you will be helping your cook or leader prepare meals for the group. You may also get the chance to help with the shopping in the local shopping centres and/or markets.
Your cook (East Africa only) will come up with meal ideas and quantities needed for large groups. Participating in the camp is usually done on a duty roster system with a group of 5 or 6 people (depending on the group size) having a different camp job each day. If you have any dietary requirements please tell us at the time of booking, and also remind your crew at your welcome meeting.
A typical camp breakfast might be toast with spreads, cereal, something hot such as eggs or pancakes, as well as tea and coffee. Lunch is almost always a sandwich with healthy salad and assorted fillings, sometimes with fruit to follow. There may be a chance on occasion to buy your lunch. Dinner might be a BBQ, rice dish or pasta dish and there is always the chance to try some African food such as ugali and stew. There will be times that your meals may be more basic due to the remote destinations you are travelling to. Your food and diet will be dependent on what is available locally as well as tinned and dry ingredients.
International flights, airport transfers, departure taxes, visas, insurance (compulsory on all trips), meals not listed, any optional tours or activities during free time, camera fees, excess baggage charges, tips and items of a personal nature.
