Meet the Rellies - Reverse

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Dar es Salaam

Grab a kanga (colourful sarong) at the Kariakoo market in Dar. You'll probably never wear it but they make a great tablecloth.

Day 2-4: Zanzibar

Meals included: 3 breakfasts

Freddie Mercury was born in the capital, Stone Town. Back then he was known as the decidedly less catchy Farouk Balsara. Hit up Mercury's Restaurant for cocktails, where we can heartily recommend the Fat Bottomed Girl.

Day 2 (Approximate ferry sailing time: 1½ hours)

Days 3-4 (Approximate driving time: 1 hour)

Day 5-6: Dar es Salaam - Arusha

Meals included: 2 breakfasts, 1 lunch, 2 dinners

Set up camp, then practice your hippo crawl and crocodile roll (aka the doggy paddle and the butterfly) in the pool. When you're suitably exhausted it's time to pull up a stool at the beach bar.

Day 5 (Approximate driving time: 1 hour. Approximate ferry time: 1½ hours)

Day 6 (Approximate driving time: 12 hours)

Day 7-9: Ngorongoro Crater - Serengeti National Park

Meals included: 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners

(Approximate driving time: 8 hours; game drive times variable)

Visit the School of St Jude, which was founded by an Aussie, Gemma Sisia, and educates over 1500 of Arusha's poorest kids.. You’ll probably knock the Big Five (lion, buffalo, leopard, rhino and elephant) off your list after a trip to the Serengeti (if you haven't already). Grab some handmade Masai bits and bobs at Mto Wa Mbu.

Please note: National park regulations stipulate that vehicles are only allowed a maximum of six hours in Ngorongoro Crater.

Day 10-11: Arusha - Nairobi

Meals included: 2 breakfasts, 1 lunch, 1 dinner

Drive, wildlife, wildlife, wildlife, sleep, wildlife, wildlife, wildlife, drive. That's pretty much it for the next couple of days. Yeah, it's going to be awesome.

Day 10 (Approximate driving time: 6 hours)

Day 11 (Approximate driving time: 8 hours)

Please note: For those of you who will be saying goodbye, your tour finishes upon arrival at our downtown hotel in Nairobi in the early evening. Flights out of Nairobi tonight should not be booked before 9.00pm. Transfers to Nairobi Airport and/or post-tour accommodation is available at an additional cost.

For those of you who are continuing on to Kigali, another pre-departure meeting will be held at 6pm this evening where we take the opportunity to meet new clients joining the tour.

Day 12-13: Masai Mara National Reserve

Meals included: 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners

(Approximate driving time: 7 hours on day 12; game drive times variable)

Depending on the time of year we might run into the world's biggest traffic jam - the wildebeest migration. Despite no horns, traffic lights or pedestrian crossings they're a surprisingly organised bunch.

Day 14-15: Lake Naivasha - East Africa Mission Orphanage

Meals included: 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners

(Day 14: Approximate driving time: 6 hours)

Get your hippo fix at Lake Naivasha. Personal space goes out the window at EAMO, and within minutes of arriving you'll have a kid hanging off every limb. Eat dinner, watch a movie, play soccer, share their lo-fi toys (think bucket lid with a bit of wire) and chat with the founders.

Day 15 (Approximate driving time: 3 hours)

Day 16: Lake Nakuru National Park

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner

(Game drive times variable)

This is the best place to see rhinos, but there are also baboons and flamingos everywhere. Head back to EAMO for a soccer match with the kids. NB: you don't stand a chance - even Van Persie would struggle to get one past these guys.

Day 17: EAMO - Kericho

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner

(Approximate driving time: 2 hours)

Spend the morning with the kids, sit in on some lessons and see how this place ticks. Then it's back in the truck to Kericho, home to some of the world's best tea. Wherever you go, a fresh cuppa is never far away. Pinkies out!

Day 18-19: Jinja

Meals included: 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners

(Approximate driving time: 8 hours)

Go bungee jumping, whitewater rafting and kayaking near our camp on the banks of the Nile. Up until 2004, Jinja was though to be the source of the Nile, but then it was discovered that the source was actually a little stream in Rwanda. Jinja remains on the hunt for another claim to fame.

Day 20: Entebbe - Uganda Wildlife Education Centre

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 dinner

(Approximate driving time: 3 hours)

It started out as an animal orphanage in 1952, then it was a regular zoo and in 1994 became a place where you can go to learn about animals and stuff.

Day 21-22: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Meals included: 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners

(Approximate driving time: 8 hours; game drive times variable)

From Entebbe we journey on to Queen Elizabeth National Park, a stunning reserve that covers almost 2000 square kilometres and includes an array of habitats.

Day 23: Ruhengeri

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner

(Approximate driving time: 7 hours)

Heads up - you'll probably be so excited for tomorrow's gorilla trek that you won't be able to sleep. Try counting the geckos on the wall; you'll drop off in no time.

Day 24: Parc National des Volcans

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner

The trek can be tough (between 1-4 hours) but once you spot your first gorilla it will seem like a distant memory. Don't forget tissues if you're the emotional sort, and be sure to grab one of the free walking sticks at the start of the trek.

Day 25: Kigali

Meals included: 1 breakfast

(Approximate driving time: 3 hours)

You'll feel shocked, angry and sad during your time at the genocide memorial but it puts your time in Africa into perspective. It's a sombre note to end the trip on, but will make sure Africa stays firmly in your heart when your backpack is gathering dust under your bed.

Please note: Accommodation for tonight is not included, but can be booked separately. If you are flying out of Kigali today, you should not book your flight to depart prior to 1.45pm. It is also vital to re confirm any flights out of Rwanda. These schedules change regularly and often by more than a few hours. These must be checked to save any problems with your departure. Transfers to Kigali Airport are also available at additional cost.
