Where the Wild Things Are

Blyde River Canyon - the largest green canyon in the world
Painted heroes
Hwange National Park - home to the second largest population of elephants in the world
Wildlife safari in Greater Kruger National Park
‘The smoke that thunders' - Victoria Falls
  • Honey badgers are hardcore. Their skin is so thick even a machete won't cut it. And their jaws are strong enough to crush a tortoise shell. The Guiness Book of World Records reckons the honey badger is the most fearless creature on Earth. Google 'crazy, nastyass honey badger' if you don't believe us.

    Itinerary

    Day 1 - Victoria Falls

Check out the falls before our 6pm group briefing. Poncho optional.

    • Camp on the Zimbabwean side of the border in Victoria Falls township
    • If arriving early, optional activities here include whitewater rafting, bungee jumping and game drives
    • View the falls themselves and to explore the nearby craft markets and the town

Day 2-3 - Hwange National Park

(Approximate driving time: 3.5 hours; game drive times variable)

Dare you to try and count the number of elephant and buffalo we see in Hwange. They're everywhere.

    • Drive to Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s premiere wildlife sanctuary, and the campsite for the next two nights
    • On arrival we will experience an afternoon game drive on a private concession.
    • On the morning of day 3 we set off on a full day of game viewing and exploring the park in open vehicles
    • Hear nocturnal creatures chattering and grunting at night
    Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

    Day 4-5 - Bulawayo

(Approximate driving time: 6 hours; game drive times variable)

Motobo's one of the best spots to see leopard and rhino. From our camp there are a few activities to choose from including mountain biking and bird watching.

    • Travel through large swathes of countryside to Bulawayo and then on to the nearby Big Cave Camp
    • Be treated to a truly stunning view - huge granite masses sculpted by time
    • Relax and take in the ambiance of the African bush
    • Experience a full day game drive, including rhino tracking, in Matopos National Park on day 5
    Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Day 6-7 - Great Zimbabwe Ruins - Musina

The ruins were built back in the 11th century and were home to Zimbabwe's royal family. Practice your curtsy.

Day 6 (Approximate driving time: 3 hours)

    • Travel south to the Great Zimbabwe Ruins at Masvingo
    • Spend the afternoon exploring this impressive archaeological site that gave the country its name

Day 7 (Approximate driving time: 4 hours)

    Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Day 8-9 - Kruger National Park

(Approximate driving time: 4 hours; game drive times variable)

Nothing compares with the thrill of spotting lions, elephants, giraffe, zebras and rhinos all in one day. Well, except if a honey badger decides to rad your camp during the night. That would be pretty awesome.

    • Travel southeast from Tshipise on well-maintained roads to Kruger National Park
    • Be in with a chance to spot elephant, giraffe, zebra, Cape buffalo, many antelope species and white rhino
    • Perhaps even be lucky enough to see lion, leopard or the endangered Cape hunting dog
    • Spend two nights in the park and embark on game drives to explore the riverbanks and bush
    • Seize the opportunity to set off on a nighttime safari with a local site guide
    Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Day 10 - Blyde River Canyon

    (Approximate driving time: 3 hours)

Blyde River Canyon featured in cult '80s hit The Gods Must Be Crazy. Xi goes to a spot called God's Window, and thinks it must be the edge of the world so he chucks that pesky Coke bottle off the edge.

    • Take a final morning game drive
    • Head into the Panorama Region of Blyde River Canyon - the largest green canyon in the world
    • View the Bourke's Luck Potholes, a series of striking rock formations
    • Enjoy views from God's Window, boasting panoramics over the lowveld and the Kruger plains
    • Camp tonight at Graskop, perched on the edge of the highveld escarpment
    Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

    Day 11-12 - Pretoria - Johannesburg

Even though you swore you weren't going to waste any money on souvenirs, it's hard to resist. Especially once you've hit the flea markets in Jo'burg with the handmade jewellery and homewares.

Day 11 (Approximate driving time: 6 hours)

    • Stop in the old gold mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest, a national monument
    • Spend an hour or two browsing around the shops and exploring the many quaint old buildings on the restored main street
    • Our final night is spent in Pretoria in shared accommodation

    Day 12

    • The tour ends this morning after breakfast. A transfer to Johannesburg's O.R Tambo International Airport are available at an additional cost and may be arranged prior to travel with Geckos or through the lodge itself
