5 things worth splurging on while travelling

Vacations are costly. You've likely been saving for a long time to be able to go on your special trip. Sometimes we can be a bit too tightfisted when it comes to spending on vacations. There are a few things that are truly worth splurging on.

Spa:
Although some resorts and beach-front towns have exorbitant spa fees, there are many places in the world where a day at the spa costs less than a typical dinner at home.

In the town of Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, I was able to receive a one hour massage, a full body wax, eyebrow sculpture, manicure, pedicure and use of the shower room for less than $35 USD. This small break was rejuviuating and certainly not something I could normally afford to indulge in.

Day trips:
It can be easy to skip day trips, as they can be quite pricey. However, it is important to remember that you will likely only be at this place once. After spending so much on a plane ticket, is an extra $15 to enter the pyramids or $150 for a hot air balloon really that unreasonable?

Classes:
Tango dancing, Chinese cooking classes, surfing lessons; there are so many skills that you can learn while on vacation. Take the time to learn a new skill and bring a little but of your vacation home with you.

Dinner:

Budget travellers can get into the routine of choosing only street food or cheap restaurants. Take one night and head to an upscale restaurant. If you avoid the larger chain hotels, you are likely to get something local, delicious, and still very cheap.

Something special:
Rather than loading up on dozens of trinkets, take the time to find a special souvenir that you will treasure for years to come. Personally, I collect postcards from every country I go to. I love being able to look back at the places I've been.

Vacations are a time to relax, rejuvenate, and prepare to return to the real world. Sometimes a few small indulgences can make the experience so much better.
