Does it get lonely, travelling alone? This is a question I’m asked quite a lot as a travel writer and the answer is, yes and no.
I know, I know, that’s not an ideal answer but it really depends on who you meet along the way, right? You might be alone sometimes, but you’re never lonely if you know you’ve got a great tripped planned with other adventure-loving explorers!
With Gecko's I had the chance to take a trip to the Galapagos and found myself sharing a cabin on the Darwin Explorer with a girl called Erin from Australia. We soon got chatting and by the end of our four day experience we had shared the absolute wonder (and the photos) of lounging with sea lions, snorkeling with rays and sharks sharing jokes around the dinner table.
Similarly, I made friends with a couple who had sold their home to travel the world. They had stories from pretty much every place I’m planning to go in South America while I work on my new book, so hearing their tips was really helpful…and they were a lot of fun. Tip: sell your house and head off if you want to. It’s working for them.
The sun sets on another adventure
As we all watched those Galapagos sunsets from the top deck of the Darwin, swigging our Coronas and cocktails and looking forward to another morning hike through even more magical scenery, I knew we’d be keeping an eye on each other’s travelling experiences in the future, on Facebook. Gecko's was a great way to see the Galapagos as a solo traveller. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re planning this part of Ecuador into your itinerary and don’t fancy going it alone!
You really do meet the most interesting people when you travel, and as a travel writer, it’s definitely these stories, these shared moments in time that I value the most. You might not have your close friends and family around you when you want them the most, but meeting the wide eyes of a stranger who’s witnessing the same incredible moment as you, somewhere new and far away, is a moment you’ll probably remember all your life.
