Overall I was very satisfied with this tour and did not expect to enjoy it or have as much fun as i did. The activities in the tour were a lot of fun, I highly recommend all the cycling activities as it was a great way to see a lot of China. The cooking and Kung Fu lessons in Yangshuo were really good. Likewise the Kung Fu show was done to a really high standard and was enjoyable to watch. I enjoyed the group meals and the restaurants we went to. I was sad to leave China but feel inspired to travel again and will eagerly start planning my next holiday!

This was my first tour with Gecko's and I definitely had the experience of a lifetime. It has been a dream of mine to explore China, and to truly SEE China--not only the tourist towns, but also the small villages where people actually live (such as Hongcun Village) and the natural beauty of China (such as the Yellow Mountains). All of that was included on this tour, along with a fun group of people, some of whom have become lifelong friends. If you are interested in a whirlwind adventure, this trip is right for you!

China blew us away, were were very impressed with the country and our overall experience was excellent. The food, culture, scenery, and people were beyond our expectations and we've been inspired to go back and explore more. In terms of the value, we found the cost slightly expensive, but in the end it was worth it as the trip went off with very little problems or hassles.

I really enjoyed my trip in China. I did think the first 3 weeks were a bit rushed. I think the GCCO tour should have been 30 days (not 25) - as we hardly ever got any time to relax and go off and do our own thing. They need extra "relax" days in Yangshou, Chengdu, Xian (Xian was way way too rushed) and Beijing.

Time spent in each place was satisfactory. Perhaps prior to departing there could be a more detailed itinerary as it was quite vague as to what would be included and what we would be doing each day. This meant we were consistently asking Grace for details.

Our tour guide Jenna made the tour! That is the first thing I would say! The great wall was fabulous, as was Xian and Shanghai. My only suggestion would be an option to get the bullet train between Beijing, Xian and Shanghai as despite the sleeper being 'authentic' we couldn't face the 16 hours on the way back so flew to Shanghai instead. This is partly to do with us being old gits and perhaps past back packing!

Great trip, saw a huge amount in only a short space of time. This meant that it was quite busy and tiring, but our tour guide sorted out all the practical aspects so well (transport, accomodation, where we needed to be), that it was not stressful or overwhelming. Hotels were great, much better standard than I was expecting for a basic trip, and getting public transport was a surprisingly fun experience most of the time! Our tour guide was really helpful and knowledgeable about the different places we saw. Overall the trip was amazing!

I thought the trip was amazing and particularly liked the local experiences such as staying with a local family, getting invited to a traditional Chinese New Year feast, travelling by sleeper train, and having free time to explore by foot. I thought we should have stayed longer in a few places such as Xi'an and Hungzhou, and less in others such as Chengdu and Shanghai. I also thought that the outline of costs and extra activities was deceiving, as it seemed very little was actually included on the trip, and it was much more expensive than I anticipated.

It really showed us what China and Hong Kong were like and I learned so much about the culture and history that I didn't know before. China has so much history that is definately worth while seeing. I wouldn't say it was a relaxing holiday but it was a great aventure! Lingtao (Michael) Chang was an amazing tour guide and taught us so much and was a great asset to have on this trip. He was so helpful every day he was with us and answered every question we had (and there were lots of questions!) He deserves a bonus from you guys! :) We could not have travelled around China and see everything we saw without him. Thanks Michael!! :)

We had a fantastic time. The trip had the perfect balance of included activities and free time. Our group leader (Jing) was brilliant. She spoke beautiful english but being a local chinese citizen she was able to communicate with those around us on our behalf. There was only 5 people in our group which meant travelling was easy and calm and had a very "travelling with friends" feel rather than a tour group. The only suggestion I would have to make the trip better would be to provide maps of every city and their metro systems (if they had one). It was actually very hard to get maps in china (particularly in english) and it was very hard to travel without or group leader becuase of our lack of maps.

I didn't quite expect the huge amount of travel that was to take place but was needed to cover such a large area as China. The four overnight train rides were bearable but rather tedious. This was made less bearable when the time from departure to checking into the next hotel could be over 30 hours. Weather is certainly a contributing factor and July was not the best time to travel China as it was very hot and humid all of the time. 16 people in a group is almost too many even if you are fortunate enough to get a great group like ours accompanied by a equally great tour leader.

I liked that our tour leader gave us heaps of options, this gave me the opportunity to participate in things I wouldn't have normally picked if I was traveling alone, like opera or Kung fu. The tour was very well planned and everything went off without a hitch! It was nice not having to worry about getting lost, or other things that are tricky in countries where you can't speak the language. Instead I could focus more on enjoying the trip and taking in the sights. After the tour I stayed in shanghai for a week and was more confident in exploring the city alone because of the helpful things I had picked up from my guide during the tour. I would definitely do a gecko tour again, and would recommend to my friends.

An optional activity in the trip was cycling aliong the walls of Xi'an. This was excellant. An included activity was cycling in Suzhou this was not, in fact able to happen, because of time, traffic and location of activity. We instead walked to the free museum and paid for ourselves to see one of the gardens (which we really thought should have been paid for since we missed out on the cycling) - I strongly suggest reversing these activities. That is making cycling in Xi'an the listed activity and Suzhou optional - with the museum and gardens as another choice.

It wasn't a very expensive tour so I wasn't expecting fancy hotels or air conditioned buses, the variety of transport made the tour very interesting and the tour guide (Jay) was excellent. The only suggestion I have is to maybe include in the overall price of the tour transfer's to our hotels from the bus stations or from the hotels to the opera or acrobats as sometimes it was difficult to find exact change for the bus on taxi. otherwise great tour.

We definitely enjoyed the tour around China! The tour guide was fantastic, It was lovely getting to know her and we would have been lost with out her! It was great seeing all the main attractions and still had time to do some shopping! Just a couple of little things we were dissapointed with.. we thought that we would of experienced the tour with a group as it was only me and my partner.. The accommodation on the sleeper trains was poor.. and would have payed a little extra for something a little nicer with more privacy. But overall It was more of a cultural experience that I will never forget!

A great trip, around average affordability due to the unpaid extras bringing up the price to the same as others. This however offers flexibility to pick and choose activities. Good itinerary, better hotels than I expected, and no horror stories.

Please note the tour commenced on Sunday, 8 July 2012 (not Wed 4 July). The trip was comprehensive. I would have liked to have arrived at tourist sights such as Great Wall, Terracota Warriors, Panda's etc first thing / at opening time to limit the crowds of people, which impacts hugely on enjoyment levels.

I had a fantastic time and felt the time i had in China was crammed full of brilliant experiences. On some occasions it would have been nice to have a bit longer to stay at certain attractions as sometimes it felt rushed. Although given plenty of time generally. The money we were advised to bring was certainly not enough. It would serve well to provide people with more of a realistic estimate including extra excursions more expensive meals etc.

One suggestion is to not have a tour that runs during the National Holiday (or at least is not stationed in big cities such as Beijing during this time) because much of our tour and/or free time is spent exhaustingly in traffic or crowds, and makes many of us not want to get out to experience the sights and markets or else makes the adventure less enjoyable (we tried to go to the Summer Palace during our free time but there were so many local tourists that it was hard to walk around from one place to the next, let alone actually see anything). Another suggestion is to rotate through which person gets a room to themselves when there are an odd number of singles - since we're all paying the same amount (the shared room fee) it would just be more fair this way. Otherwise I felt the tour was well organized and the leader was great!

This tour was nothing short of that, it wass action packed with fun, unexpected AND interesting activities (not the usual boring museums etc). To top it off our group was lucky enough to have a small size of just 6 which was a combination of the 'Legends of China' and 'Iconic China' tours. Our tour leader Alan was a well-spoken english, and at times humourous yet reliable source of valuable information which allowed us to move around the cities quite easily. Thanks Gecko's/Alan!

She was always professional, even though we had one very difficult member in our group, ie: trying to change the itinary to always use bullet trains instead of the regular sleeper trains. I guess this person didn't read the itinary very well. It was exactly the way it should have been, so as we could get the full experience of travelling the way the locals travelled & seeing how they lived. That is why I picked this tour. So many memorable things, we had an excellent group and leader which really made our trip so fantastic.  In terms of the sights, seeing the panda's are a definite highlight as is climbing the great wall, climbing yellow mountain, the terracotta warriors, tianamen square, forbidden city, tai chi in Yanshuo, learning to play Mahjong and shocking the locals that we could actually play!  One of the funniest things that happened on tour was our group was posing for a group photo in Tianamen Square, while we were all lining up all these locals came out of nowhere and jumped into our photo, we then retaliated by jumping into a group of local's photos's (of course after being asked to join!)

Eric was a wealth of imformation, the trip would have been a disaster with out him and we would not know what we know now - thank you.

The Great Wall. A fantastic experience  - we saw no other travellers for the first hour or so, which was a special way to enjoy such a beautiful location.

Jerry, our tour leader was AWESOME, he went out of his way to ensure everyone was happy. He arranged Birthday suprises for members of our group.   When Jerry spoke of his family & growing up we felt as tho' we got a glimpse of the real China.

All accomodation includes toothbrushes & paste.  The food is fanstastic - fresh and lots of it.  Learn a few words of mandarin before you arrive.  And above all remember "This is China" and you are a guest in this wonderful & diverse country

Jenny was simply wonderful. She was so patient with all our silly questions, she problem-solved like you wouldn't believe, and particularly in her home town of Yangshuo she was a wealth of knowledge and exposed us to all aspects of local life.

It is worth doing this trip because it includes the major sights, but also the benefit of seeing the Yellow Mountains, a very beautiful area.

If you are considering going to China and only have a short time availiable then this is the trip for you. We experienced all the sites and still had plenty of time to shop in the capital, Beijing. The Great Wall and the Terracotta Soldiers make the whole trip worthwhile. An experience not to be missed in a lifetime.
