  Itinerary

  Day 1 - Tokyo

  Bring sunnies - there's a heck of a lot of neon here. Trust us when we say get up early for the Tsukiji Fish Market.

  • Arrive in Tokyo at any time
  • Perhaps visit the Edo Museum, Hamarikyu Gardens, Shinjuku Gardens or partake in a Soba noodle class

  Day 3-4 - Nikko

  Bit if history today: a shrine here, a temple there, and then an overnight stay in a ryokan.

  • Catch the train to Nikko and appreciate the spectacular countryside
  • Perhaps visit the Toshugu Shrine, the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu or go up to Chuzenji Lake and Yumoto for hiking and natural hot springs

  Day 5-6 - Hakone

  No clothes or swimwear allowed in the hot springs. So suck in that gut and leave your inhibitions at the door.

  • Jump on another train to the hot spring region of Hakone arriving late evening
  • Take a boat across Lake Ashino-ko, followed by a cable car journey over the surrounding mountains
  • Perhaps be lucky to get a glimpse of Mt Fuji looming in the distance
  • Why not take a bath in an outdoor onsen (hot spring bath)
  • Optional visits include the Checkpoint Museum and the Open Air Museum

  Day 7-9 - Kyoto

  You might spot a geisha making her daily visits before you hit the karaoke bars tonight.

  • Travel to Kyoto by bullet train
  • Head out to Gion, the famous Geisha district in the evening and observe the age-old tradition of immaculate geisha girls visiting members of the wealthy elite in small teahouses tucked away down tiny back streets
  • Get a taste of Japanese performing arts, anything from flower arranging to a lion dance, at the Gion Corner
  • Perhaps hire a bike, take a home cooking class or visit the Kiyomizu and Sanjusangendo temples before the trip comes to an end
