LET’S FACE IT. IF ALIENS DISCOVERED HUMAN LIFE ON EARTH, IT’S PROBABLY THANKS TO PERU, WHOSE TWO THOUSAND-YEAR-OLD NAZCA LINES CAN BE SEEN FROM SPACE. JUST ASK GOOGLE EARTH.

When you travel to Peru, you’re setting yourself up for a pretty mind-expanding adventure. You’ve got the Inca Trail to hike, Machu Picchu to explore, guinea pig to eat, poison dart frogs to avoid, pisco sours to consume and the Nazca Lines to get your head around. And then there’s the Amazon jungle trek, the reed islands of Lake Titicaca, the Andean condors of Colca Canyon and the towns of Arequipa, Puno, Lima and Cusco. Mind expanded. View all Peru trips

HOLA AND WELCOME TO THE TROPICS, WHERE THE BEACHES ARE DREAMY AND THE WATERS FLOW LIKE A COOL GLASS OF COLADA DE AVENA (AWESOME SMOOTHY). WITHOUT THE THICK CONSISTENCY AND YELLOW TINGE.

Travelling in Ecuador is like travelling in a compact version of South America. You can see the Andes, climb volcanoes, head to the beach, go wild in the Amazon jungle, hang out with llamas and of course see the incredible wildlife of the Galapagos Islands. If shopping is your thing there’s the Otavalo market town. If adventure sport is your thing there’s Banos (not to be confused with the Spanish word for toilet). If evolution is your thing, there are the Galapagos Islands. For the foodie things there are hundreds of ways to eat chicken, beans and guinea pig (yep). And if you like parties that start after midnight and end when you call it a night, Ecuador is your, well, thing. View all Ecuador trips

BOLIVIA SHOULD REALLY BE CALLED BOLD-IVIA. GET IT? ITS NATURAL WONDERS ARE BRAZEN AND THE ARCHITECTURE IS "CLASSICALLY GOOD LOOKING". THAT'S RIGHT, BOLLY, WE'VE GOT YOUR CARD MARKED.

Bolivia. Not just an excellent (and perhaps the only) rhyme for Olivia. You can do heaps of things here. Like watch people dig for silver at Potosi, prune up in thermal baths, sing camp songs at Lake Titicaca, gawk at the Island of the Sun (mythical birthplace of Inca civilization), saddle up and tour Old Sucre’s monastic buildings and, of course, check out the mega salt-lick of the Salar de Uyuni – it’s like being at the snow (with flamingos). Ski lovers can find real snow at Chacaltaya, the world’s highest ski resort, with bonus llamas and really high-fives. Speaking of the world’s highest things, La Paz is the loftiest capital on all of Google Maps. Altitude with attitude. Back down at normal altitude levels, you can take some deep breaths, chow down on spicy choripan and toast to your trip with gourds full of chicha de colla. View all Bolivia trips

IF YOU’VE EVER WONDERED WHAT THE MESTIZO DO WITH THEIR LLAMAS OR YOU’VE BEEN PRACTICING THE TANGO SECRETLY IN YOUR ROOM, THEN LET DR GECKOS SUGGEST A GOOD DOSE OF SOUTH AMERICA TRAVEL.

Whether you wanna trek the Inca trail, swim with sea lions in Galapagos, get your daily intake of lobster at Ipenema Beach or get high (no, not in that way!) at the highest body of water, Lake Titicaca – South America is sure to give you a good injection of fun. So jump on a Geckos South America trip and hit the peaks of Patagonia, bathe under a full moon in Ecuador, climb your way to Machu Picchu and lose yourself to the passion and the paradise. View all destinations in South America.

IT’S THE LAND WHERE SACRED COWS FREELOAD THROUGH THE STREETS AND LOCALS GO GAGA (NOT LADY) FOR BOLLYWOOD SOUNDTRACKS. INDIA’S FULL OF WEIRD AND AMAZING MOOMENTS.

Travelling India is pretty much like nowhere else in the world. It’s mind-blowing, mind-expanding, mind-boggling, but not mind-numbing. And with about 1.2 billion people sharing the space, there are just as many experiences to be a part of. That includes an all-night chai-athon while you wait for a cow to finish its nap on the train tracks. In the north you can ride a camel through the Thar Desert, meet the hippies of Jodphur and live on lassis (please also eat food). Then there’s that little place called the Taj Mahal. ALTHOUGH MARLON BRANDO LEFT HIS CRAZED JUNGLE CITADEL DECADES AGO, VIETNAM IS STILL A PRETTY COOL PLACE – IN FACT, IT’S PROBABLY BETTER THAN IT'S EVER BEEN.

If you haven’t travelled in Vietnam, you haven’t lived (remove travel snobbery at your own discretion). This country is mesmerizing, intoxicating, mind-expanding and super fun. It's superlative central. In Ho Chi Minh City, one of the highlights is the traffic. We kid you not. Find a safe spot on a roof terrace and allow yourself to be hypnotized by the noisy ballet of motorbikes below. You can stay with local friends in the Mekong, cruise around stunning islands in Nha Trang and Halong Bay, get a new wardrobe in Hoi An and explore Hanoi’s art scene while munching on a baguette. Vietnam is the kind of place you’ll leave relaxed with a belly full of delicious food, well-dressed and with a thousand tales to share. "This one time in Hoi An..." View all Vietnam trips

SAY CHEESE! NO, NOT FOR THE PHOTO, SILLY, BUT FOR ALL THE SMILING THAI PEOPLE WHO ARE WAITING FOR YOU TO SMILE BACK. BECOME A FRIENDLY LEGEND. NOT A MISERABLE LEG-END.

Another day in Thailand, another day in paradise. Sigh. It’s tough you know, especially with all those beaches to snorkel from, waters to sail on and jungles to explore. Not forgetting the green curry chicken to eat, beer to drink, people to meet. In this bit of paradise you can trek to meet hilltribes in Chiang Mai, sail to Koh Samui, drink cocktails on the beach in Koh Tao and temple hop in Chiang Rai. You can find out how glittery the Golden Triangle really is and whether the massages in Bangkok are really same same but different. Don’t forget to cruise a khlong and eat your body weight in pad thai. “Paradise is such a chore,” said nobody, ever. View all Thailand trips

IF YOUR IDEAL GETAWAY INVOLVES A TARZAN TREEHOUSE AND SNUGGLING UP WITH A YOUNG LEO DI CAPRIO ON DESERTED BEACHES, THEN HOP ON OVER TO ASIA, STAT.

Whether you wanna get your Indiana Jones on at ancient Angkor Wat, climb the epic Mount Kinabalu or drift across Burma’s Inle Lake, this magical region is packed to the brim with the best of the tropics. So jump on a Geckos South East Asia tour and swim beneath waterfalls in Laos, crawl through Viet Cong tunnels, hang out at Halong Bay, surf perfect Balinese waves, gorge on tom yum in Thailand, and let the friendly folk, food and fun fill you up with the good holiday vibes. View all destinations in Asia.

WHERE DO YOU GO FOR SWEET GRECO-ROMAN SITES, THE BEST KEBABS KNOWN TO MAN AND THE MOST MOONLIKE CITY? NO, NOT ITALY, LEBANON OR THE EARTH’S NATURAL SATELLITE – GO TO TURKEY INSTEAD.

Any country that straddles two continents has to be diverse, right? Right. You could say that Turkey has so many things to see and do it needed an extra continent to share the load. But do you know who totally ruined it? The Greeks, the Romans and the Ottomans. Ruins are everywhere (#lol). There’s Ephesus’ ancient amphitheater, Pammukale where Cleopatra used to take a dip, Cappadoccia’s cave houses and an entire city near Kekova Island that’s under water. Goggles might be required for that one. What else? The food! Kebabs, fish sandwiches, pistachio ice cream and lots and lots of tea. And then, if all that eating and sightseeing makes you feel tired you could sit on a boat and sail through waters. Of the light blue variety. View all Turkey trips

IF RAPUNZEL, CINDERELLA AND HANSEL AND GRETEL WERE REAL, THEY’D SURELY BE LIVING IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC. SO YOU DIDN'T KNOW THEY WERE REAL, HUH? OUR BAD!

The Czech Republic put the exclamation mark in Boho! If you ever wanted to know what bohemian looked like, it’s sipping absinthe while reading Kafka in an underground jazz bar that’s housed in a 15th century building in Prague. Technically, the Czech Republic has only existed since 1993, but its charm is all old world. Castles, cobbled streets, fairytale landscapes and a population that’s fiercely proud of its history. In Prague, you’ll get a crick in your neck from looking up at the medieval buildings. They’re everywhere. The antidote to neck-cricks is looking down into a velké pivo (big beer) that the town is famous for. In Cesky Krumlov you can climb medieval towers, cycle along the river, wander cobbled streets and act out your fairytale fantasies. BYO prince/princess. It’s bohemian, it’s fairytale-esque, it’s Czech, mate. View all Czech Republic trips

THERE’S A REASON WHY ITALY LOOKS LIKE A HIGH-HEELED BOOT KICKING A SOCCER BALL, AND WE SUSPECT IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH PIZZA… OR NOT.

Travel to Italy and get to know the country behind the headlines. Beyond the bunga bunga parties, football match-fixing scandals and ‘is-it-about-to-blow-again?’ volcano, lies a country tailor-made for stellar travel moments. Collaborate with Geckos and tour the cool coast of Amalfi aboard a yacht, be shocked by the scale and devastation of Pompeii, break your pizza-eating personal best in Naples, down some Limoncello in Sorrento and pretend you know something about art in Florence. With gluten-loaded menus to suit all budgets, the land of the Baci McFlurry delivers a massive slice of travel awesome to anyone who appreciates sparkling seas, colourful local identities, a cavalier approach to road rules and a commitment to living La Dolce Vita. View all Italy trips

IF YOUR PERFECT DAY INVOLVES LIMONCELLO FOR BREAKFAST, BAKLAVA FOR LUNCH AND CROISSANTS FOR DINNER, ALL CONSUMED FROM THE DECK OF A MEDITERRANEAN SAILBOAT, THEN WE RECKON IT’S TIME YOU WENT ON A EUROPEAN TOUR.

Whether you wanna sail the isles of Croatia, explore the Acropolis or swim the sunken city of Kekova, Europe never fails to bring the Old Continent adventure. So jump on a Geckos Europe trip and fly high over Cappadocia, wander the Christmas markets of Germany, eat cheese at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, see the sunset over Santorini and let centuries of history inspire your wanderlust. View all destinations in Europe.

LET’S GO TO MEXICO, HOME OF SPEEDY GONZALES, MAYAN CITIES, BEANS, INTENSE CITIES AND RELAXED COASTS. ANDALE, ANDALE, ARRIBA, ARRIBA! THAT MEANS HURRY UP.

Ah, Mexico - a place where food and drink collide in a perfect mash-up of delicious chaos. This place is the stuff of beans. We mean, uh, dreams. Travelling through Mexico, you’ll begin to see a certain theme occurring. That theme will usually involve street side tacos and sipping mescal. And if it doesn’t, you’re doing it wrong. Once you’ve had your fill you’ve got the likes of Tulum and Oaxaca to navigate – the rest is ancient history. And then there are the beaches, or playas, and the ocean that belongs to them. Mexico’s the kind of place that gets better the more you get involved. So, y’know, get involved. View all Mexico trips

WE KNOW, WE KNOW, YOU LOOOVE HISTORY, RIGHT? BEACHES AND TROPICAL RAINFORESTS TOO, YEAH? NEVER FEAR, GECKOS AND GUATEMALA HAVE GOT YOU COVERED.

The island town of Flores, the ancient city of Tikal, the sweet river of Rio Dulce, the volcano-flanked town of Antigua, the famous Chichicastenango market, a homestay at San Jorge La Laguna, and the adventure hotspot of Panajachel – heading to Guatemala with Geckos is an action-packed love affair. There’s probably no Central American excursion quite like it. Apart from all the other Central American excursions we do. Those are awesome. View all Guatemala trips

IT’S THE SIMPLE THINGS IN LIFE THAT MAKE COSTA RICANS SO HAPPY – NATURE, BEACHES AND VOLCANOES. THE LATTER IS CLASSED AS NATURE, BUT IT NEEDS ITS OWN SPOT. ONE MORE? OKAY. VOLCANOES.

If there’s one thing we know about Costa Rica, it’s that we run really, really good trips there. If there are two things we know about Costa Rica, it’s that they have toucans and sloths. Our favourite fact about sloths is that they’ve been known to sometimes mistake their own arm for a branch, grab it and fall out of trees. Once you’ve stopped laughing, consider for a moment how awesome it would be to explore San Jose, chill out at Puerto Viejo beach, wander through the cloud forest of Monteverde and walk through the sky on a jungle canopy walk. Once you’ve stopped daydreaming, think back to the sloth. View all Costa Rica trips

IF YOU THINK SPANISH IS THE SEXIEST LANGUAGE IN THE WORLD AND YOU COULD EASILY EAT CORN (DONE ALL WAYS) FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, THEN WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? VAMANOS TO CENTRAL AMERICA!

Whether you wanna gorge on deep fried foods and amazing condiments in Belize, dance sexy in Havana or celebrate death with sugar skulls and flowers in Mexico, Central America’s intoxicating rhythms and friendly locals will win you over with one beat of a Honduran drum. So jump on a geckos Central America tour and go snorkelling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve, wave away the cigar stink in Cuba and dive into a sacred sink hole in the Yucatan Peninsula while you get into the Central American groove. View all destinations in Central America.

WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN, THROUGH MYSTIC SANDS AND PERILOUS PYRAMIDS, RIGHT TO THE HEART OF THE COOLEST PLACE THIS SIDE OF 2000 BC.

There’s old. Then there’s Egypt. It’s a whole new level of old. Even Cairo has been knocking around since 969 AD. There’s also busy. Then there’s Egypt. In the cities you’ll see swarms of cars, motorbikes, donkeys, tractors and bikes running in every direction. And finally, there’s awesome. Then there’s Egypt. Things that have to be seen to be believed. Off the top of our heads: Sphinx, Great Pyramid, Red Sea, Alexandria and this one donkey called Ginger. Egypt, nobody does it quite like you. ARE YOU TAKING THE MICHAEL, JORDAN? THINK CLASSICAL RUINS, FOLKSY BEDTIME STORIES AND SLAM DUNKS (SORRY) OF DESERT PLAINS. YOU'LL HAVE A (BASKET) BALL!

Travel to Jordan to see the Middle East’s quiet achiever hard at work. Small in size but not in stature, the Kingdom of Jordan is enjoying a renaissance of late, so it would be a wise move to check out what all the fuss is about. On a Geckos tour of Jordan you’ll get to channel your inner Indiana Jones at Petra then dune bash through the Wadi Rum desert. Experience extreme saltiness in the Dead Sea then enjoy a night off the grid at a Bedouin desert camp. Pretend to be an archaeologist at the Roman ruins of Jerash and traipse Amman where the old meets the new. Oh, and since Jordan regularly throws up white-hot, scorching temperatures, you’ll sweat too. IF JESUS, MOSES AND MOHAMMED WERE WITH US TODAY, WE BET THEY’D BE IN ISRAEL. IT'S NOT JUST A PRETTY COOL PLACE TO GET YOUR ART-FIX, BUT A HOLY LAND FOR THREE EPIC RELIGIONS.

Travel to Israel and immerse yourself in blockbuster religious iconography, supreme street food, sacred sites and enough museums to keep you ticking. On a Geckos tour of Israel you’ll see the Western (Wailing) Wall in Jerusalem, gaze out onto the Sea of Galilee, visit the iconic Church of Annunciation in Nazareth and test your patience at tricky border crossings. While Israel is a tiny country, it’s got cultural, culinary, architectural, historical and spiritual experiences of biblical proportions. Israel isn’t somewhere you stop off at or drop by, the Holy Land requires attention, commitment, devotion and an open mind and heart, regardless of whether you’re Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Agnostic, Animist, Rasta or Jedi. A convergence of ancient lore and contemporary politics, tradition and modernity, spirituality and practicality, birth and destruction: Israel rewards travellers with experiences. Y’know, for when you write your memoir. View all Israel trips

IF YOUR BUCKET LIST INCLUDES SEEING A NOSE JOB-GONE-WRONG AT THE SPHINX AND BECOMING A HUMAN BUOY ON THE DEAD SEA, THEN IT’S TIME YOU ZIPPED ON OVER TO THE MIDDLE EAST.

Whether you wanna leap like Aladdin through Cairo, fill your backpack full of stuff you don’t need in Tunisia’s epic medina, or get fancy in the UAE, the Middle East has a world of exoticness (yup, that’s a word) to offer. So jump on a Geckos Middle East tour and ride the camels in Morocco, meet dead Kings in Luxor, visit the holy sites in Israel and feel like Indiana Jones in Petra, while you let the Middle East’s world of wonders take you away. View all destinations in Middle East.
