Journey through the incredible Amazon Jungle in Peru

The Amazon is the biggest, baddest jungle there is. Fo’ real. We make its acquaintance in Puerto Maldonado, head up Tambopata River by boat, stalk into its rainforest under the cover of night (and day) and visit a clay lick. Macaws looove licking clay.

No amount of David Attenborough documentaries can prepare you for the mind-boggling awesomeness of the Amazon Jungle. So switch off your TV, put down your iPad, and channel the spirit of Alexander von Humboldt, one of Darwin’s influences. Google him.

Why we love this trip

  • Your remote jungle lodge is a sweet base to get your nature on. And if your tired legs ever need a bit of TLC, kick back in a hammock and chat to some parrots

  • You cheeky little monkey! Not you, silly. We're talking about that primate swinging behind your head. This place is packed full of wildlife, so bring an extra pair of eyes and wallet full of memory cards

  • What's better than exploring the Amazon Jungle? Doing it with someone who has the land mapped inside their awesome brain. Jungle guides are super-friggin' awesome

  • Roam the Amazon Jungle at night while pretending you're David Attenborough (this adds to the suspense). Float down the river, keeping an out for the glaring eyes of jaguars and caiman - giving a whole new meaning to cats eyes.

Is this trip right for you?

  • The Amazon Jungle can be very hot and humid, so it's important to drink plenty of water and wear light cotton clothing. Make sure you also bring tropical-strength insect repellant.

  • This trip includes a full-day's walk in the jungle. Even though the paths are well defined, this still requires a reasonable fitness level and sturdy walking shoes/light hiking boots.

  • At the Amazon lodge you will join other non Geckos travellers who may be older than 39 years old.

Welcome to Peru. On arrival to Puerto Maldonado Airport (PEM), you'll be transferred to the heart of the Peruvian Amazon.
A lodge representative will welcome you at the airport. You will then head to the Amazon lodge's office in town (a maximum of 15 minutes by van) to pack the necessary gear for the next few days. Here you can leave most of your luggage in safe storage and continue travelling with a small pack with just the necessary items for your next two nights in the jungle. Then you'll take a motorised canoe upriver approximately 2 hours to your jungle lodge in the Madre de Dios area. Once you arrive, there will be time to unpack and unwind. Rooms at the lodge are basic but clean and comfortable and there are flushing toilets, showers, mosquito nets and kerosene lamps. However, there is no electricity in the rooms. Electricity will only be available in the common areas, and likely at a designated time, not all day. Lodge staff are primarily local, including the multilingual guides who can teach you all about the area's rich flora and fauna.

Keep an eye out for toucans, otters, spider monkeys and hopefully avoid anacondas. Once in your lodge, attend a short briefing where we'll be collecting your insurance details and passport information. Tonight, head out into the jungle on a night walk.
