Why we love this trip

  • See the mighty Niagara Falls in all its glory. Get wet and wild with a boat cruise to the base of the falls by day and see it lit up in technicolour by night

  • This is our only trip that goes to Gettysburg - this historic site was made famous by Lincoln’s Gettysburg address and the Civil War

  • See a bit of everything – the excitement of New York, the magic of Niagara Falls and upstate New York, and the history of Washington, Boston, Philadelphia and Gettysburg – all in one week

  • We love Washington because there’s SO much to do, and most of it’s free. We spend a full day here so there's heaps of time to explore.

Is this trip right for you?

  • On this trip you'll be spending a fair amount of time in a van with other travellers, so conditions may feel a little cramped. This is all part of the adventure, however, and you might even make some long-term friends.

  • Traffic in and out of New York and Boston can be hectic, especially during holiday periods. There may be delays, so be prepared to take part in car games to keep you entertained.

  • During this trip you'll find you have free time within the cities you visit. These are best explored on foot, so you'll get the most out of your trip if you're reasonably fit and able to walk moderate-to-long distances. However, public transportation in these cities is modern and reliable.

  • These are expensive cities. You should be prepared to pay more for things like food and drinks than you would in other parts of the country

  • The legal drinking age in the US is 21. Our leaders are unable to help under-agers procure alcohol

Itinerary

Welcome to New York City, concrete jungle where dreams are made of, the city that never sleeps.

A welcome meeting will be held at 6pm this evening in the hostel foyer/lobby. We’ll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information, so make sure you’ve got everything on hand to give to your leader.

Download and review the latest trip notes before your trip as we make improvements and changes to our itineraries. This will ensure you have the most up to date information about your trip. Check the Visa section of these trip notes for any information about visa requirements too.

As this trip does not spend any time in New York we recommend arriving a few days early to take in the sights. Urban Adventures (see www.urbanadventures.com) has a stack of great day tours to help you get a real taste of New York City.

Travel north for about two hours into the state of Pennsylvania and Gettysburg, where one of the most important battles of the American Civil War took place in 1863. Gettysburg is a quaint town surrounded by picturesque farmland, and containing beautiful examples of pre-Civil War architecture, such as the Dobbin House Tavern, built in 1776. There are heaps of things to see in Gettysburg, mostly Civil War-related and, of course, the site of Abraham Lincoln’s famous ‘Gettysburg Address’.

There are waterfalls and then there are waterfalls, and today we’re headed to the latter: the breathtaking Niagara Falls. After a six-hour drive, arrive at the famous falls, where your leader will take you to one of the best viewpoints for getting some double tap-worthy snaps of this powerful natural wonder. But the best way to appreciate the immensity of the falls is from the water on an optional boat ride. Pop on your stylish poncho (provided on board the boat) and head straight for the falls at the Horseshoe Basin on the thrilling Maid of the Mist boat.

Boston was founded by the Puritans in 1630, who immediately banned all forms of celebration (yes, even Christmas). Fortunately this law was revoked in 1681 when English-appointed governor Edmund Andros stepped in, also lifting a ban on Saturday night partying. Lucky. After driving for around 2.5 hours, arrive in Boston and soak up the atmosphere of this historic city. Perhaps enjoy a stroll along the British colonial streets and visit the Fanieul Hall Marketplace, or head to the nearby Italian District for a final dinner with your group before our trip comes to an end.

Today we travel 5-6 hours south, as we return to New York.

Day 9 is departure day and we say farewell to New York for memories that will last a lifetime. The arrival time depends on each group, but we generally aim for a later afternoon arrival. If you are flying out today we suggest you don't book a flight before 8:00 pm to allow enough time to transfer to the airport for check-in 2 hours before your flight.

As there is a great deal to do in New York we recommend staying a few extra days to make the most of this exciting city. Consider our full day sightseeing tour of New York (see www.urbanadventures.com).
