Poseidon's Playground

Naxos
  • Get into the Mediterranean swing of things by pottering about Santorini, scoffing down saganaki and knocking back ouzo. See heaps-old towns, villages and monasteries in Amorgos, Hora and Syros. Loll about in sun-drenched sand on Mykonos and Sifnos. Return to more saganaki scoffing in Santorini.

Poseidon was the Greek God of the Sea. And when you’re on his turf, you’ve got no choice but to enjoy every last minute. After all, the last thing you want is to upset the Greek God of the Sea. That dude is ripped.

    Itinerary

    Day 1 - Santorini/Ios

Santorini is one of those places that's easy to recognise. This is because it has loads of blue and white buildings, tonnes of ruins and heaps of natural beauty. It's also got 365 churches and chapels, which means you could visit one every day of the year. If you wanted.

Set sail after your 11.00am group meeting

Leave the hubbub behind and sail through the calderal

If arriving a couple of days early, perhaps visit Megaron Gyzi Museum, The Museum of Prehistoric Thera and the Archaeological Museum

After 5 hours gliding across the Aegean, drop anchor in Ios, stopping along the way to sample Manganari Beach - a haven for swimming and snorkelling

Explore Hora's shops, restaurants, nightclubs, bars and cafes -they all come alive in the evenings

If you after a more authentic taste of the old town, try to explore during the day while the masses are beachside
Perhaps visit the popular beaches of Gialos and Milopotas, which boast range of water sports

    Lunch

    Day 2 - Amorgos

Amorgos was the setting for The Big Blue, that 1988 film about free-diving which you might have seen but you probably didn't. It had Jean Reno in it, that guy from The Professional, Mission:Impossible and something called L'opération Corned Beef which could potentially be the best movie title ever.

Sailing for around 4 hours today, you reach the rugged, mountainous Amorgos - known as the stunning location of Luc Bresson's film, 'The Big Blue'

Stop by Paradisi Beach, resting place of The Big Blue shipwreck

After a swim, head along the coast to port

Perhaps relax on the waterfront, with its restaurants, cafés and bars

Take some time to explore the nearby the ancient Minoan Settlement

Drive up to the 11th century monastery, Moni Hozoviotissis, which was built gripping the cliff-face

    Breakfast | Lunch

    Day 3 - Small Cyclades

One of the many perks of being on a boat is the ability to drop anchor almost anywhere. And with clear waters, beaches, sleepy tavernas and fishing villages all around, you won't get much better than the Small Cyclades for an overnight stay.

Cast off this morning for a 4 hour amble over sparkling water and arrive in the Small Cyclades

Make the most of the clear waters, great beaches, friendly locals and sleepy tavernas all built around quaint fishing villages

Explore town, sample some fresh seafood in a waterfront taverna, then sit back and simply enjoy the Mediterranean

    Breakfast | Lunch

    Day 4-5 - Naxos

Naxos is pronounced just the way it looks. Not to be confused with everyone's favourite mexican treat. You won't find a lot of corn chips here. But you will get heaps of delicious fresh fruit like melons, figs and peaches). Or skip that and go straight for a plate of tigania, fried pork in lemon sauce with lashings of local cheese scatterd over the top.

Head to the island of Naxos and indulge in the culture, beaches, villages, olive groves and, of course, the vibe of Hora

The old town areas of Hora are perfect for a stroll or partake in the nightlife

The best beach choices are to the south, where water-sports are also on offer

Follow a pathway up to the Venetian Kastro where mansions, monuments and churches all retain their medieval spirit in a mass of winding laneways

Stop by the old Roman Catholic Cathedral in the square, and the nearby Archaeological Museum which is housed in the former Jesuit School of Commerce

Take an optional jaunt out into the countryside - glimpse local rural life, visit one of the oldest temples in Greece, then chill out up in the hills with lunch at a family tavern

Get a taste of the local brew with a shot of Kitron, basically a lemon liquer, and top it off with a wander along the beach

    Breakfast | Lunch

    Day 6 - Syros

Syros has been inhabited since the stone age, and apparently its first inhabitant, Keraunus ('Lightning'), arrived on the back of a dolphin. Which he rode from his shipwreck. Without any formal training. Or a map. Those ancient Greeks were pretty out there.

Spending around 4 hours under sail today, drop by the Bay of Gaidharos for a swim, and then head for Syros - known for its relaxed atmosphere and neo-classical architecture

Off the main tourist trail, Ermoupolis is a great place to sample some authentic Greek food and culture

Perhaps dinner and drinks at a waterfront taverna or drop-by the cafes near the palm-fringed town square

Catch a bus up the hill to the fortress-like village of Ano Syros

    Breakfast | Lunch

    Day 7 - Mykonos

Mykonos was where Zeus fought the titans. Now it's somewhere you can visit, explore and enjoy. It's what Zeus would've wanted (probably).

Upping anchor, set off on a short 3 hour sail to Mykonos

Check out the Church of Panagia Paraportiani and its unique array of lines and angles are simply fascinating

Soak in the atmosphere by joining fellow sun-seekers and party-goers on the beach, then perhaps wander down to Little Venice

Perhaps sit back with a cocktail and enjoy an Aegean sunset

    Breakfast | Lunch

    Day 8 - Sifnos

Sifnos is a peach of an island in the Cyclades. The main town is called Apollonia. Apollonia is also the name of the actress who played Prince's love interest in the video clip for Purple Rain. Who says you don't learn anything reading travel brochures?

Back on board our sights are set on the island getaway of Sifnos

The beach in the main port of Kamares is the ideal place to swim, work on your tan or chill out in a waterfront taverna and cafe

Perhaps visit Apollonia, the capital, sitting on a plateau 5 km up the road from the port

Stop by The Museum of Popular Art

    Breakfast | Lunch

    Day 9-10 - Folegandros/Santorini

Folegandros was once a place for the exiled and imprisoned. Now it's a place for the liberated and curious (ie. you). The whitewashed houses and cobblestone streets will win you over in approximately two minutes and 23 seconds. You can quote us on that.

Set sail for Folgandros, with its dramatic cliffs and wild landscapes

Perhaps Take a stroll through the island capital, Hora

Enjoy a leisurely morning sail and bid farewell to the Mediterranean

Head back through the caldera and drop anchor in Santorini

Departure time on Day 10 is approximately 11am

NB: If you are planning to depart today please do not book a flight earlier than 4pm in case our arrival is delayed due to weather conditions.
