Hi Sarah,
i just came back from a month in Africa, so i have been through the whole Pin cusion issue. we spent over $1000 for 2 of us for all our injections (including malaria tablets).
We took the Larium because it was the once a week sort, but we did do a trial of them before we went to check out if we were the lucky ones to not get side effects. It did make me feel a little queeze for the few hours after i took them, but no nasty dreams or anything so they are what we took. Most people on out tour took the once a day ones though...
We also had the cholera drinks, typhoid, meningacocle, tentnus & Heps as well as yellow fever.

So in short, ask if you can do a trial of the Malaria tablets, even though it's extra expense you'll be able to check if YOU get side effets, and will also give your body an extra chance to get used to them.
At the end of the day Africa is amazing it is so worth the money and pain of the injections!

regards, Jacqui

We had hep A and B, yellow fever, typhoid and tetnus shots. We took the Malarone anti malarial in Africa. I can't recommend it enough. We just got back from south america where we took larium. My husband and I both hated it. Neither one of us could sleep. It seemed to get a bit better everytime we took it but, it definately disturbed our sleeping habits. I sucks to be on holiday exhausted and unable to sleep.

Oh yea, we also took dukoral. It is a drink taken twice before travelling to prevent travellers diarrhea.

Hi
My GP, who is also a travel doctor, advised against cholera. It isn't particularly effective (about 50%). Her advice was just to be super vigilant about eating with dry hands and not eating food washed in the local water. The advice about the cholera is about 2 years old, so might be worth checking.
We had yellow fever, updated our tetanus, Hep A& B (which gives lifetime protection), and typhoid. I also opted for the meningitis vaccine, as it is one of those things that can kill you before you can get to a hospital.

We took Doxycycline daily, but found it made us susceptible to the sun. you also have to take it when you get home, which is a pain. We actually stopped early, because it was making us feel horrible, and we knew we hadn't seen many mozzies. Also it was summer in Newcastle and we kept getting sunburnt.

Hope this helps

I agree with Hadleycat, go Malarone for your anti-malarial. Its expensive but fantastic, no side effects. Larium made me sick, I took Doxy and I got absolutely scorched in the sun. Malarone was the only one that had no side effects

Everyone reacts differently to anti-malarials. I've always taken Lariam and all it does is make me sleep more deeply than normal. As Jacqui says, try them a few weeks before you go. You will still have time to change to a different one if you get any unpleasant side effects.

My travel doc (like Lea's) advised against the cholera vaccination (3 years ago) but I believe there are a couple of new ones which are supposed to be more effective now. There is no space to "tick the box" for cholera in my vaccination book.

I had shots for typhoid, meningitis, Hep B and yellow fever. I had the course of vaccinations for Hep A for a previous trip.
