Nepal’s Buddhists know a thing or two about where to put their gompas. Thyangboche has a fair claim to be the most lavishly located monastery in the world: perched amidst pines firs on a ridge above a river and meadows, sitting in the shadow of earth’s highest mountain, and offering spectacular views not just of Everest but also numerous other peaks, including a beautiful aspect of Mount Khumbila and the Khumbu Valley. Destroyed first by earthquake in 1934 then by fire in 1989, that a monastery stands here is a testament to both faith and determination. Resting here after the trek from Namche Bazaar is a tranquil treat, the perfect place to calmly take in the surrounding grandeur. Come in October, however, and you’re in for a livelier treat, with the Mani Rimdu festival – nine days of ceremonies and meditation, concluding with monks performing their famous Mask Dances.
