The Adriatic island of Hvar

The Adriatic island of Hvar

A short ferry hop from Split, Hvar Island at times resembles a splinter of Provence that’s sailed away to lie among the Adriatic’s deep blue waters. From the island’s hub, Hvar Town’s bustling marina, the warren of pedestrianised little medieval streets quickly runs out, leading onto a glorious patchwork of rolling lavenders fields, rosemary and heather, pine forests and olive groves.  Exploring this island is simply one of the great joys of Croatia: a sun-soaked coastline of beaches and quiet coves, cafes serving locally made wine and freshly caught fish, and a handful of atmospheric, antique towns, all colourful window-boxes and honey-coloured lanes.
