Alexandria

Sitting on the shores of ‘the Great Green’, rooted in Africa and facing towards Europe, Alexandria is an essential stop for anyone who wants to understand and appreciate Egypt, both modern and ancient. There’s no point in hiding the fact: Alexandria wears its rich history lightly. That is, the city of Alexander, of Cleopatra and one of the world’s seven wonders is all but gone.. Best, then, to get on with the business of enjoying yourself. The ancient library may be gone, but ‘Alex’ remains a literary haven: the new library is an exciting cultural hub of the city, period cafes with rich histories abound, and a stroll along the corniche, copy of Alexandria Quartet tucked safely under the arm, is pretty much mandatory.
