Ancient Roman city of Salona
Five kilometres from Split, and a universe away from the port bustle, the ancient Roman city of Salona is a gentle, peaceful place to roam. In its pomp, this was one of the Roman Empire’s larger cities, and the ancient ruins, usually all but deserted, are picturesquely strung out among olive groves and meadows. The western end of the site is home to the most impressive relics – the amphitheatre. Around 20,000 spectators could cram in here, and it’s a lovely location, looking out to the inland hills one way and down to nearby Split, the modern-day skyline of buildings and cranes lining up in front of the silver sun-kissed sheen of the Adriatic.
