Arequipa’s Cathedral

Arequipa’s Cathedral

The nearby Santa Catalina Monastery is arguably Arequipa’s greater sight and a must for any visit, but the cathedral – a massive beautiful white confection, palm-fronted with the Misti Volcano looming behind – is a joyful place to wander. Or just relax out front in the Plaza de Armas, where locals take their evening paseo amidst the flowers and fountains. A day or two spent in Peru’s White City, and you quickly realize why Arequipa, Quechua for ‘let’s stop here’, is so called.
