Ballestas Islands

Peru’s very own Galapagos are a hidden treat for travellers. Dozens of islands teem with bird life – look out for pelicans and penguins, terns and boobies – while the sea lion-rich waters are a happy hunting ground for killer whales. This precious ecosystem is rightly protected – landing on the tiny islands is prohibited – but a day aboard a boat, seabirds flocking above, penguins darting  around and inquisitive sea lions bobbing in the waters – is one of the continent’s great wildlife experiences.
