Be dwarfed in Abu Simbel

Southern Egypt’s final, thrilling hurrah. Travellers who venture this far are rewarded with the magnificent temples of Abu Simbel, carved out of the mountainside on the banks of the Nile. The Great Temple of Ramses is the star of the show: its forecourt guarded by four gargantuan statues of the pharaoh. Entering the temple as these colossi loom balefully above is to be a pygmy among giants, as powerful a demonstration of the might of the ancient Egyptians as you’ll find anywhere. Elsewhere, the stone sentinels of the Nefertari Temple are another, watchful highlight, but it’s those four unblinking, 20-metre Ramses that will stay with you long after you journeyed north again.
