Rajasthan’s cities jockey for visitors’ attention and energy, each serving up a glorious profusion of palaces and forts, temples and bazaars. Beautiful, but take a break – get off the tourist route and stop in at the village of Nimaj Bagh, a guidebook-free zone. The Thar Desert rises on one side of town, pastoral land of wheat and millet on the other – this is India’s rural heart. Primarily a farming community, in Nimaj Bagh you gain a true appreciation of the extraordinary hospitality of the Indian people: the beaming children who greet you on the street; the friendly waves from local women in their ornate jewellery and colourful saris; the welcoming warmth of your hosts. Sure, there are activities to keep you busy here: countryside to explore, a lake to relax by, for example. But don’t leave without strolling the town’s little riddle of streets, a fascinating glimpse into India’s age-old, enchanting way of life.
