The 'Blue City' of Hohhot
Hit the old town of Hohhot and get amongst the Mongolian and Muslim traders on this Chinese stretch of the Trans Mongolian Railway. The town seems part Chinese part Mongolian, for just out of town the Mongolian grasslands stretch away all the way past Ulaanbaatar and north into Siberian Russia. For this reason the old town is a hodge podge of distinct cultural handicrafts from along the railway’s route. And whether you’re on the first or final leg of your Trans Mongolian adventure, get stuck in to some local cuisine; it’s worthy of an introduction to China or a final culinary gift before you’re into simmering ger hotpots and the smoked fish of Siberia.
