A little south of the incomparable experiences of Antelope Park, the Great Zimbabwe ruins offer one of the most atmospheric camping experiences in all of Africa. Pitch your tent near the formidable ancient structures and be sure to wake up early for a view of the sun rising over some of Southern Africa’s oldest buildings. Part of the joy of the ruins is their lack of a clear narrative – their origins and the culture that populated the extensive site remain a mystery. The Queen of Sheba perhaps, or the Bantu? Artefacts from the 5th to the 15th century, from Persia to China, have been found, giving credence or potentially dispelling the claims of different cultures and archaeologists.
