Prime contender for Morocco’s underrated city, Casablanca may not have the carnivalesque qualities of Morocco’s imperial gems, but it’s got a bustling little medina, a raft of great cafes and an undeniable European influence in its streets and food that can all come as pleasant surprises to unsuspecting visitors. In the Hassan II, it’s also got one of the world’s largest mosques, capable of housing over 100,000 worshippers, and comes complete with retractable roof. A stroll through the medina to the mosque gives a lovely combination of North African sights with a definite European flavouring.
