Central Arcadia's Lousios Valley
The Arcadian highlands are one of Greece’s most beautiful and quiet corners. The Lousios Gorge wends its way through here, a verdant sanctuary for hikers, river-rafters, and monks. Monasteries are spectacularly built into rock faces, as improbable and spectacular a location as Meteora or Mount Athos, but relatively unexplored. Prodromos and Philosophou monasteries nearly face each other across the gorge, huddled among the cliff walls and both perched precariously overlooking the ravine below. The exteriors may be as austere as the rock surrounding them, but the interiors hold an unlikely blooming of colour – a view of Prodromos’s biblical frescoes rivals the sensational one out from the monastery to the surrounding countryside.
