On the southern fringes of the pantanal, the tropical hills, glassy waters and rushing cascades around Bonito in Brazil’s south are perfect to gaze upon, but go one better and dive in – this is an area that begs for adventurous exploration, heaven for every budding Bear Grylls. Snorkelling’s a must – Bonito’s got the cleanest, clearest waters you’ll ever swim in, so packed with fish it’s like being in an aquarium. For the brave, there are cathedral-like caves ready to swallow you whole, many with fathomless lakes inside, or trek through dense rainforest to waterfalls, then rappel down the shimmering cascades.
