The colonial city of Salta
The hub of Argentina’s northwest, Salta buzzes with life and may just be Argentina’s most loveable city. A walk, coffee and cake around the stunning main square, Plaza de 9 Julio, should be followed up by making like the locals and heading to the bars and restaurants of Calle Balcarce. While you’re there, try to catch a peña – Buenos Aires may love its tango, but around these parts it’s all about this folk dance. A couple of glasses of the local drop (from the world’s highest vineyards in Cafayate) and you might just be tempted to join in.
