Diving and snorkelling in Lake Malawi
An unmissable treat around these parts. The rich warm waters of Malawi are home to over 600 species of small iridescent fish, as well as more birds, reptiles and mammals than a few dives could possible exhaust. Sandy beds and massive underwater boulders covered in algae are the backdrop for the stars of the show: cichlids of every colour flitting in front of you. These fish may be the most immediately startling of Lake Malawi’s sights, but look out for scuttling freshwater crabs, and giant catfish lazing in the lake’s shallows. The lucky might be approached by curious lake otters, while night divers usually end up surrounded by dolphinfish. At any time of day, Lake Malawi’s depths are a special place to be. Oh, and remember keep a look out for the odd wandering hippopotamus.
