
For eager gin-swillers, this might just be as essential a highlight of Uganda as the gorillas. Distilled from bananas, hotter than a bushfire and with a kick stronger than a giraffe’s hind legs, waragi is Uganda’s sundowner of choice. The name is said to come from ‘war gin’, and a bit of it coursing through your system is said to keep mozzies and sandflies at bay. Look out for it in handy sachet form, knock it back neat or swig it down with lemon or cola, and whatever you do, don’t believe anyone who tells you waragi doesn’t give you hangovers.
