Fes vies with Marrakech for Morocco’s liveliest souks, most memorable medina, and greatest number of lost, bewildered tourists. After a morning’s carpet-haggling, escape the crowds, and the sun, and join the locals with a visit to a local hammam. These bathhouses are a Moroccan institution, are dotted around the Fes medina, and are a perfect way to both unwind and be a part of the fabric of city life. Hammams consist of a series of rooms, each warmer than the last, from cooling washroom to steaming sauna. For a couple of dollars, you will be scrubbed, steamed, showered and sent on your way, feeling ready for the world again.
