Meet cheeky chimps on Ngamba Island
Ngamba Island in Lake Victoria is home to a 100-acre, eco-friendly sanctuary for 39 orphaned chimpanzees, rescued and with no chance of survival in their natural habitat. Here, amidst the island’s equatorial rainforest, is one of Africa’s greatest animal encounters, and the best chance you’ll ever have to get up-close to man’s closest relatives in the animal kingdom. A forest walk with the chimps will invariably involve a chimp scampering onto your back, maybe a spot of grooming, and helping to feed these utterly loveable, cheeky scamps. The postures and facial expressions are mesmerizing in their familiarity, and the panted hoots of excitement and smile when they’re being tickled may well be your fondest memories of your African adventure.
