One of southern India’s most beautiful and strangest spots, Hampi exacts a powerful pull on all who visit. In a landscape strewn with enormous boulders, a scene that looks like God’s been playing marbles, the ruins of the Vijayanagar Empire emerge spectacularly into view – many temples, each seemingly more awesome than the last, parade in front of you, the stall sellers set up on the red-dust roads in front of each magnificent facade helping to bring the old buildings to life again. Rightly a World Heritage Site, the sublime Vittalla Temple is the star of the show, lavish and ornate in its carving, exotic in its design. Go and gawp.
