Indian market town of Otavalo

In a continent of dazzling, colourful markets, Otavalo is perhaps the greatest. Lively enough throughout the week, Saturday is the time when the town reaches its boisterous peak, and when you can really put your bargaining muscle to the test. It’s unlikely you’ll be buying much in the livestock market, so stock up on the fantastic weavings and craftworks from the stalls in the chaotic, carnivalesque Plaza de Ponchos, where hundreds of traditionally-attired indigenas – think ponchos, felt hats, intricately embroidered blouses and billowing long black skirts – ply their trade.
