The Kazansky church in Irkutsk, one of the largest cities in Siberia, is a blue-roofed beacon reminiscent of the colorful domes of St Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow’s Red Square. It is one of several buildings of impressive architecture in Irkutsk, all jumbled up with blocky, Soviet-era commercialism. To wander this city of distinctly Russian flavour is to see its periods of history through its constructions and you’ll get a feel for how the particular Russian identity was forged.
