A community-based wildlife project, established to help protect Botswana’s remaining rhinos. A little over thirty rhinos (mainly white) are free to roam in the 4000-hectare sanctuary, and, with numerous calves born over the past few years, Khama is a vital part of Botswana’s efforts to increase the country’s black and white rhino population. Visiting is not, however, a staid zoo-style experience, but an adventure in a proper reserve. 230 bird species are here, and many other mammals – including zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, springbok, warthog, and leopard – can also be seen. Better yet, the safari drives get close up on many animals – game viewing is consistently excellent. Conservation’s never been such fun.
