La Paz - the world's highest 'unofficial' capital city

Rivalled only by Rio for holding the title of grandest location of any South American city, La Paz is stunning from the moment you first lay eyes on it. Occupying a crater bowl some 3,500 metres up, and surrounded by the country’s highest peaks, one of the chief pleasures of the city is idly gawping at both the scenery and the surrounding streetlife, where turning every corner reveals another vibrant, colourful market. It’s just as well La Paz merits slow exploration; at this altitude you don’t want to go anywhere in a hurry – a five-minute walk on an uphill street can have you reaching for another cup of the ubiquitous coca tea.
