Leptis Magna - lost for 1300 years
Tell anyone who knows of Leptis Magna that you’ve visited Libya without a tour here, and you’ll be looked at as if you’ve lost control of your faculties. Africa’s finest Roman city, the ruins may be nearly 2,000 years old, but they retain a spectacular pull on all who visit. A highlight is a beautiful theatre that looks out onto a stage backed by an elaborate façade of columns, while the blue-green Mediterranean pounds the rocky ashore behind. The pleasure here, however, is not confined to one particular relic, but to wandering around, gawping at the scale of the place. An enormous site, such is its size that significant discoveries are still being made here. Discover it for yourself.
