The Old Town of Lijiang, a maze of cobblestone streets, narrow canals and decorative wooden houses, is a wonderful place to wander around and imagine life in a bygone age. Cross stone bridges over tricking streams and shuffle behind bent-back locals under sweeping eaves before stretching out to ascend Lion Hill to one side of the best-preserved townscape in Yunnan. Atop is Wangu pagoda, from where you’ll enjoy panoramic views over the Old Town. The far side mountain range is often topped with slow brooding clouds - a fitting natural counterpoint to the timeless streets below.
