Manila

A rambling shambles full of maniacal mayhem may be Manila’s unfortunate international image, but pick your itinerary carefully and Manilla rewards – this is a city with a lot to like. A daytime wander around the walled neighbourhood of Intramuros is a good place to start; home to the city’s finest buildings, the Spanish-era churches, palacios and plazas lend a distinctly Latin America flavour to the streets and help give Manila a feel quite different to anywhere else in Asia. Then, come nightfall, you could do worse than make a beeline for the Malate and Makati neighbourhoods, where crackling nightlife of all sorts is dished out, from dive joints to the city’s latest style bars to up-until-dawn clubs – day or night, adventurous travellers will find plenty in Manilla to thrill.
