Meiji Shrine's wood block wishes
The Meiji Shrine complex is in easy reach of Harajuku Station after a short walk through Yoyogi Park. Beneath the shrine’s sweeping shingled roofline, you can write your wishes on a small wood block and tie it with the hundreds of others at the temple entrance. The wishes gather until the end of the month, when the resident monks contemplate them before burning. If your only wish is to have an authentic Japanese souvenir, then these attractive blocks with the temple’s name and the current year’s zodiac printed on one side will make a fine addition to your shelf at home. The boards can be bought from every shrine in Japan and though the animal depicted will be the same, the designs always differ. A tour collection of tigers, rabbits or dragons, anyone?
