Mount Mayon Volcano
Perfectly conical and a little angry, Mount Mayon rises on Luzon’s southeast spur. One of the country’s icons, a central figure in local belief systems and simply a great place to explore, Mayon is a heavy smoker, with fumaroles frequently blooming into view and a significant eruption every few years. Trekking and exploration on the slopes of one of the world’s most active volcanoes is a spine-tingling treat – and beautiful too, with forests sheltering rich bird-life and an understorey of ferns and orchids while elsewhere there are rocky fields of frozen lava flows to negotiate. A fierce, fearsome star of the Pacific’s ‘ring of fire’, and one of the Philippines’ must-see treasures.
