Mount Pinatubo

Mount Pinatubo

Pinatubo awoke in 1991, a colossal eruption that led to the evacuation of thousands from nearby villages, ash drifting as far as South America, and the formation of Pinatubo’s most striking feature, its crater lake. Blue-green waters encircled by steep walls of rock and vegetation, it’s a compelling sight, a lush, enticing moment after the sticky walk uphill to get here, and one that tempts many to indulge in a spot of high altitude swimming or boating. Even more extraordinary is to think that this whole scene was created a mere two decades ago, the cataclysmic explosion eliminating the mountaintop cone and reducing the summit height by some 300 metres.
