The prayer then the kettledrum’s beat, the flute’s call then the ceaseless spin, the gentle swoosh and swish of long flowing robes – if you have the chance to see whirling dervishes perform while you’re in Turkey, don’t miss it. A deeply religious, event for the ascetic Sufi Muslims, for observers it is a mystical, intoxicating experience. The Mevlevi Monastery in Istanbul holds weekly performances, but if you’re heading to Konya, one of the spiritual homes of the dervishes, be sure to check whether the cultural centre has any performances – unforgettable.
