Stretched out along Lake Titicaca’s southwest shores, lively Puno stands a breath-catching four kilometres above sea-level. Spare a thought then for the men and mules who in the 1860s carted the Yavari steamship in thousands of pieces up from the Peruvian coast, crossing the world’s driest desert, high mountain passes and the altiplano before reaching the lake, where the boat was reassembled, nearly 10 years after it originally arrived from the UK. And there it stands today, in the process of being restored to its former glory, open for visits, and a fascinating testament to the perseverance of all those who made that mad, monstrous journey.
