If you can, be here for the camel fair. Around late October to early November every year, Pushkar seems to become the centre of the world, a maelstrom of festivities and trading, colour and noise. Pilgrims and musicians, mystics and traders – it’s a bewildering whirlwind of life lived at full tilt. At all other times, Pushkar settles back into simply being one of India’s most enchanting towns. Sadhus make their way to the holy lake, while the desert beyond is both inviting and forbidding. Take in the spectacle of Hindus bathing in the lake’s sacred waters, then, if you have time, indulge in other cultural treats that Pushkar offers: yoga sessions, perhaps, or a performance by the Saraswati Music School.
