Siwa Oasis

Siwa Oasis

A great little pit-stop en route to the majestic White Desert, and unique among Egypt’s oases, Siwa is a characterful Berber town, alive with traditions and architecture that seems more at home in Morocco than Egypt. Squat, square adobe buildings line Siwa’s sleepy little streets, rubbing up against ancient ruins while, in the middle of town, rising like an ambitious sandcastle, sits the ruined citadel of Shali. A walk up here gives great views of the town, and further afield to the palm and olive groves stretch out, welcome shades of green for the eye after the parched land you’ve travelled through to get here.
