Songkran Festival, Chiang Mai
Songkran Festival, or Thai New Year, is well up there for the best time spent while wet, perhaps no more so than in Chiang Mai. Consisting of a HUGE country-wide water fight, the build up to this festival happens for months in advance, with everyone from grandmas to school kids buying the biggest and best water pistols they can find. After the rituals of the preceding few days, the New Year itself is a free-for-all soaking. Huge buckets of water in every doorway can refill empty pistols, or be used to splash over anyone hoping to remain uninvolved. Thai’s love nothing more than soaking a farang tourist, and will take greater delight if you join in and soak them back. The tip is to be prepared, and don’t take anything out that you mind getting wet. Songkran is from 13th to 15th of April each year, and can be enjoyed anywhere in Thailand, though Chiang Mai’s celebrations are considered the best. And the wettest.
