Songpan's minority people
Beyond the high alpine forest areas and wide grasslands of Tibet, deeper in the belly of China, lies Songpan: an old, walled town of cobbled streets and tiny shops filled with Tibetans and Qiang minority traders. Locally made, heavily embroidered traditional garb and finely crafted jewellery are for sale and a wander around town is fun for its China-in-miniature feel and the possibility of some unique purchases. However, a visit to the world heritage-listed park of Jiuzhaigou is the locally renowned stunner; here are turquoise lakes and waterfalls of resplendent beauty and plenty. Walk the park’s trails and bridges and, especially in autumn, be amazed at the forest’s colour reflected in the water.
